What is Health Literacy?

"The degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions."
Healthy People 2010
US Health and Human Services

The Foundation improves health literacy by focusing on each of the required abilities mentioned above.

All Foundation initiatives are positioned financially and geographically to reach underserved and medically vulnerable populations. Retailers, partners, and distributors are selected based on carefully analyzed demographics and partner with the Foundation to offer our material at a substantially reduced cost, in some cases for free.

Further, works are written on a reading level accessible to all. The Foundation recognizes it is critical to ensure comprehension. Enabling readers to derive meaningful benefit--in many cases, life-saving information--from each work lies at the core of our mission.

The Foundation creates and distributes health information that is relevant, accurate, and accessible to the people who need it the most.
