Our History
The Health Literacy Foundation was established in 2003 by Hilton M. Hudson II, M.D. to enable medically vulnerable and underserved populations to gain access to the most reliable and relevant health information and materials. The Foundation is based in Munster, Indiana with satellite offices throughout the country.
The Health Literacy Foundation acts as a clearinghouse featuring the most up-to-date health information and strives to ensure the content is easy to read and both culturally and gender sensitive. The Foundation funds potential health literacy initiatives, partners with community-based organizations, builds coalitions, creates national programming and projects, and connects beneficiaries with the resources that they may not otherwise receive. We collaborate with both corporate sponsors and other non-profit organizations that share the same mission and vision to serve underserved populations across the nation, including diverse, ethnic minorities, the elderly, and children.
Health literacy materials prouduced by the Foundation are often disseminated to populations in need through its network of partners and community-based initiatives free of charge.
Health Literacy Defined
What is Health Literacy?
"The degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions."
Health People 2010
US Health and Human Services
The Foundation improves health literacy by focusing on each of the required abilities mentioned above.
All Foundation initiatives are positioned financially and geographically to reach underserved and medically vulnerable populations. Retailers, partners, and distributors are selected based on carefully analyzed demographics and partner with the Foundation to offer our material at a substantially reduced cost, in some cases for free.
Further, works are written on a reading level accessible to all. The Foundation recognizes it is critical to ensure comprehension. Enabling readers to derive meaningful benefit--in many cases, life-saving information--from each work lies at the core of our mission.
The Foundation creates and distributes health information that is relevant, accurate, and accessible to the people who need it the most.

Mission and Vision
The Health Literacy Foundation Mission
To ensure all persons are afforded the tools and resources needed to make prudent health decisions and understand the impact of available treatment options.
The Health Literacy Foundation Vision
We envision a world where all people, regardless of ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, educational level, or attainment in life are provided with the health information and tools necessary to live at their highest health capacity. The Foundation's future is not bound by time and represents a global interest. This Vision serves as our foundation for a system of strategic planning in the United States and abroad.
